Kwanzaa is a Swahili word that means "first" and signifies the first fruits of the harvest. The Festival which begins on December 26 and lasting for seven days, Kwanzaa is a celebration of community, family and culture, established as a means to help African Americans reconnect with their African roots and heritage. Kwanzaa is based on seven principles (Nguzo Saba) The principles: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination, Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose) Kuumba (creativity) and Imani (faith). Each of the seven candles signify the principles.
This event on Tuesday, December 28th will focus on the third Principle of Kwanzaa Ujima, which encourages African Americans to build and maintain our community together and make our community’s problems our problems and to solve them together.
