Their “speakeasy” or “prohibition era” music incorporates a little blues, a bit of swing, and a pinch of old time gospel. Add to that Tray’s powerful 1920's inspired vocals, often described as Bessie Smith meets Louis Armstrong, and audiences feel like they’ve stepped straight into a 1920’s theatre house. Mikyung Sung, Double Bassist

Sunday, August 18, 2024

3:30 pm - 5:00 pm (doors open at 3:00 pm)

**Ticket purchase includes Hors d'oeuvre and Wine

About The Artist:

Mikyung is one of the most beloved double bass soloists of today, inspiring to student bassists and audiences alike for her naturally expressive interpretations, bel canto phrasing, colorful range of timbres, luminous, yearning tone quality, and fearless virtuosity.

Since arriving in the US this summer, Mikyung has performed with the Emory Chamber Music Society, gave a guest duet appearance with Nina DeCesare at UNCSA's Double Bass Day, and appeared as soloist with the Atlanta Festival Youth Orchestra, as well as giving masterclasses at UNCSA and Kennesaw State University. She is currently in Korea for a month, where she is giving a recital as well as two performances with her double bass quartet, the Emeth Ensemble.

In the past Mikyung has performed as soloist with the Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie, Philharmonie Baden-Baden, Seongnam Philharmonic, Colburn Orchestra (conducted by both Ludovic Morlot and Yehuda Gilad), Caesura Youth Orchestra (Los Angeles), Erato Ensemble (Korea), Philharmonia Corea, KNUA Orchestra, and Guri Philharmonic.

She has been invited to perform in future seasons with the Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt and Bergen Filharmoniske Ungdomsorkester, and to give masterclasses at San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Penn State, Juilliard and Manhattan Schools, and the Royal Academy of Music and Royal College of Music in London.

A few years ago, Mikyung was invited to perform the Beethoven Septet in the Brahms-Saal of the Musikverein Wien with Julian Rachlin, Sarah McElravy, Daniel Ottensamer, and Radek Baborák, a concert that was unfortunately canceled due to covid.

Her debut album "The Colburn Sessions" (with pianist Jaemin Shin) was positively reviewed in Fanfare Magazine, saying for instance:

  • "Massenet’s ubiquitous “Méditation” from Thaïs (1893) sounds as natural to Sung’s instrument as the more familiar violin version, with the middle register sweetly lush in the manner of an exalted cello."

  • "Mendelssohn composed his 1843 Sonata No. 2 in D for his brother Paul, a cellist. Sung has no trouble negotiating the rapid passagework of the first movement Allegro assai vivace, leaning hard into the melodic tissue... A breath-taking finesse marks the whole movement."

  • "César Franck’s familiar 1886 Sonata in A Major... well serves Sung in transcription, given her innate skills in voicing and expressivity... The singing line of the second movement Allegro provides a real moment of instrumental intimacy from Sung and Shin, the kind of double bass lyricism some of us recall from having heard American bassist Gary Karr. The gradual acceleration of figures from Sung at the movement’s coda would raise the roof for any audience. Poise and poetry illuminate the last two movements, the Recitativo-fantasia and canonic Allegretto poco mosso, literally removing any trace of the music’s origins as such and transporting us to that refined world of instrumental accomplishment at its best."

Mikyung won the grand prize, audience prize, and special jury prize at the 2010 JM Sperger Double Bass Competition in Germany at age 17, as well as prizes at the 2015 ISB Solo Competition in Colorado and 2017 Bradetich Competition in Texas, along with winning all the major Korean music competitions.

Mikyung was a principal bassist of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra in the 2018-19 season and taught at the Shanghai Orchestra Academy. She received her Artist Diploma from The Colburn School and BA from Korea National University of Arts.

Bluegrass Meets Rock ‘n Roll
Thursday, May 9 2024
7:00 PM with doors open at 6:30 PM

**Ticket purchase includes Hors d’Oeuvres and Wine

Scruggs'-style banjo picker "The Rev" Jeff Mosier, one of the earliest music pioneers who merged bluegrass instruments and traditional tunes with the magnetic energy of rock and roll, founded the jamgrass band Blueground Undergrass (BGUG) in 1998 after years of crafting his banjo skills in various bands, playing everything from bluegrass with his brother Johnny (Good Medicine) to experimental rock (Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit) to jazz-fusion (The Ear Reverents). Blueground Undergrass, the band he fronted for more than a decade, recorded four albums and built a sizable national following by combining bluegrass purism with a jam band sensibility. Later, as the jamband scene became more jam-tronica and less roots-driven, he formed a more song-driven rock/bluegrass ensemble, The Mosier Brothers band, performing at festivals, theaters, and private events throughout the region. Having shared the stage with such legends as Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements, Col. Bruce Hampton, Phish, Leftover Salmon, and Widespread Panic, Mosier has always been a versatile artist who is as comfortable performing on a stage full of musicians as he is playing solo.

"Perhaps no guest artist has had as great an influence on the band's music as the Rev. Jeff Mosier..." -- The Phish Companion

Currently, Mosier can be found performing around the country, occasionally joining projects such as the fully improvisational musical ensemble Everyone Orchestra or stalwart and vivacious The Grass Is Dead band. He is also very active playing shows, benefits, and festivals around his home base of Atlanta, as well as producing and recording in the studio.

Mosier's superb vocal mastery and unique banjo picking combine to deliver a special experience highlighting his original tunes as well as familiar traditional songs in novel arrangements. Whether traveling through acoustic ballads, thought-provoking and humorous banter, or high-energy bluegrass, each performance by Rev Jeff Mosier is a musical journey sending the listener on an enjoyable foot-tapping, mind-bending, and body-grooving jaunt down the road and back home again.

Layla Musselwhite is a New Orleans-based singer songwriter and slide guitarist. Drawing on a rich musical legacy via her father, blues legend Charlie Musselwhite, Layla grew up on the road steeped in the music of the greatest blues artists of our time. Charlie’s innovative playing led him to share stages and travel the world with artists like Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Big Mama Thornton - & John Lee Hooker was Charlie’s best man when her folks decided to make it legal. These artists were legends to many and family to Layla. As a teenager, she started getting lessons in Mississippi hill country guitar from Charlie, and her solo shows reveal her understanding and deep respect for early blues rhythms and melody, with a contemporary soulful voice that sends chills down the spine.

“You’ve got to hear her play slide.” Brian Stoltz from the Meters said when they shared a stage at Chickie Wah Wah that she was “The real thing – lots of guys try to play like that and they can’t. She’s got it. Amazing.”

DUO CATANZA returns to Mimosa Hall & gardens for a magical afternoon of exquisite classical guitar music!

Join us for an enchanting evening of harmonious melodies as the two virtuoso guitarists Scott Plato and Matthias Young take the stage. Duo Catanza will transport you to a world of timeless beauty through their exquisite interpretations of classical compositions.

What is Catanza? When creating the name for their guitar duo, Scott and Matthias decided to use something that would be reflective of their heritage. Scott’s great grandfather immigrated to the United States from Catanzaro, Italy, which is known as the City of the Two Seas. In thinking of ways to use Catanzaro within the name of the duo, the decision was made to shorten the name to Catanza. In addition to creating a word unique to the duo, the name also highlights the word, tanz, which is German for dance. As Matthias has German heritage, amongst others, this seemed to be a perfect choice. Thus, Duo Catanza was created.

Indulge in the elegance of classical guitar music on December 17th.

Unusual and Rare Plants of Georgia

Henning von Schmeling has been at the Chattahoochee Nature Center (CNC) for 37 years, starting as a part time janitor while in college and ending up as Senior Director of Operations. In late 2022 Henning switched positions at CNC and is now the Conservation Horticulturist. All along his journey at CNC he has shown a passion for native plants, learning how to propagate and grow many species in our greenhouse and growing facilities. Another aspect of the new position is to grow and propagate many of the rare and endangered plant species from Georgia concentrating on species from Northwest Georgia.

Program Detail

Join Henning as he goes on a plant journey through Georgia. There are so many physiographic regions in this state and each has their own unique set of species. We will start the journey in the mountains of Northeast Georgia and end up in the coastal plain. Unique habitats will bring with them unique challenges to the plants and he will explain how some plants have adapted to these conditions.

Classical Music Series Presents: Bevin Hill, Soprano

Soprano Bevin Hill has gained attention as a performer of great charm and charisma in a variety of leading roles. While frequently cherished for her comedic gifts, being memorably lauded as a “rubber-kneed goddess of slapstick,” Ms. Hill has also been praised for her nuanced acting, technical finesse, and vocal control interpreting tragedienne roles.  In 2019, she performed the world premiere of the aria Feather on the Wind, written specifically for Ms. Hill by composer Thomas Ludwig, at the Ludwig Symphony Orchestra’s Spring Gala Concert, debuted with Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra as a featured soloist at their Christmas Gala Concert and performed Handel’s Messiah in her hometown of Atlanta, GA.

Ms. Hill received her Masters degree in Vocal Performance at Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of acclaimed soprano and director Catherine Malfitano and her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Carnegie Mellon University. During her time at Manhattan School of Music, she performed the roles of Mélantho in Fauré's Pénélope and Gismonda in Steffani's Tassilone, as well as writing and performing in the children's opera The Cricket in Times Square. Ms. Hill was a 2012 District Winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in her home state of Georgia and Regional Semifinalist for the Southeast Region.

Classical Music Series Presents: Denielle Wilson, cellist

Denielle Wilson is a musician and educator from Lithonia, Georgia. She has taught privately and publicly, and performed in solo, chamber, and orchestral settings throughout the Atlanta, Chicago, and Charlotte metropolitan areas.

Her interest in a career as an orchestral musician began while spending five years in the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Talent Development Program, studying with cellist Joel Dallow. In this program, she and other students with Black and/or Latinx backgrounds received an advanced music education from the ASO through lessons, performances, and scholarships in preparation for college-level music studies and eventually careers in Western classical music. She went on to receive her Bachelor’s degree in Cello Performance and Music Education from Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music, with her primary mentors being Hans Jørgen Jensen and Wei Yu. While at NU, she played in the school’s Symphony Orchestra and the NU Cello Ensemble, as well as participated in chamber music groups coached by the Dover Quartet.

More recently, Denielle completed her master’s degree through the Diversity Fellowship with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music.

Denielle’s burden for community engagement began early in her journey as a musician. She and her two siblings, Danya and Cliff Jr., formed the Wilson Trio in 2007, a piano trio that has given free performances in and around Lithonia. Her interest in music education has also kept her active in music ministries at her local church, and she continuously seeks opportunities to reach young people with educational performance experiences and affordable music lessons through substitute teaching and community arts education programs, such as Arts+ in Charlotte, N.C.

Denielle plays a cello made in 2020 by Mauricio Aguiar, a violinist in the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. She is currently performing as a section cellist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for their 2022-23 season.

Classical Music Series Presents: Jane Kramer, Vocalist

Classical Music Series Presents: Jane Kramer, Vocalist

Lauded by UK music reviewer Three Chords and the Truth as sounding like she was “…born to gypsy poets and raised in the mountains by Emmylou Harris,” Asheville, North Carolina songstress Jane Kramer has garnered international recognition for the sultry, heartrending originality of her vocals and for the heavy-hitting lyrical eloquence of her songwriting.

With deep roots in the musical traditions, culture and lore of her beloved Appalachia, Kramer’s songs are introspective, gracefully gritty and fiercely memorable. They elegantly sweep listeners down the gravel roads and southern coastal highways, midnight truck stops and lonely motel rooms of “hard learning” and lead home to the wooded Blue Ridge Mountains with moving acceptance of our flawed human experience. Kramer’s live performances are equally as poignant and engaging; rich with accessible, warm, often hilarious storytelling and gracefully lifting the veil between audience and performer.

After a seven year stint as founding member, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter in the nationally-touring, Asheville-based all female Appalachian Folk outfit, The Barrel House Mamas from 2003-2010, Kramer recorded and released her first solo album, Break & Bloom, in Portland, Oregon in 2013. Following the February 2016 release of her acclaimed sophomore solo studio album, Carnival of Hopes, Kramer has been touring nationally and internationally, playing for sold-out audiences in listening rooms, theaters, pubs, festivals, living rooms and arts councils in support of the record. This has gained her a loyal following from Portland, Oregon to Scotland, U.K to Florence, Italy.

Quoted as “…an artist on the rise” by acclaimed American songwriter Mary Gauthier and as “…a voice that can only be described as one of the purest in modern Americana” By Dave Stallard of Blue Ridge Outdoors, Kramer has performed with such well-known artists as Joan Osborne, Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls, Gretchen Peters, Appalachian troubadour Malcolm Holcombe, Shawn Mullins and Maria Muldaur.
